Sunday 3rd Feb, Megalong Mega

This is a great training run and is the perfect long run in the build up to the race. The start is at the Megalong Cemetery which is where the 6ft course crosses the Megalong Valley Rd. Those that joined us for the run down Nellies Glen in December will recognise the start.

Full details are on the FatAss web site - the link it on the blog to the right.

The course follows the 6ft track course so it's really very hard to get lost since it's all signposted. The first 7 or so Km wind you down to the Coxes river crossing passing the foot bridge a km or so before you get to the river.

You will cross the Coxes River the point on race day where there will be a rope; don't try to keep your feet dry, they will only get wet later on at a couple of other creek crossings and it does no harm to get used to this. There are all sorts of advice on how to approach this on race day, some stop and empty any sand that gets in, some wear gaters, some carry dry sock, some just keep on going...... it's really down to you; your feet will get wet and most shoes will drain really quickly so unless I have a have a sockful of grit I just keep on going....

I just thought I'd post this youtube video from last year.... this really is the exception but shows how wild it can get and there was a huge amount of rain for a very long period last year and absolutely no expectations it will be close to this at the weekend.

Coxes crossing last year

But I have to advise that you shouldn't cross if you have any doubts or you are on your own, the depth is usually only waist high at most and not fast flowing but judge it on the day and go over the the bridge if you have any concerns.

After you cross over there is a camp site and there should be water - there is a water tank and I have been told this week that it's full so you can top up on the way out or back.

You now have the challenge of the hills to get up to the Pluviometer...............

Great run - though it did take me 5 hours 12 minutes to cover the 36km.... It was somewhat comforting to now know what I'll be faced with on race day, at least I have worked out what to eat and how frequently I replenish so that's one less thing to worry about on race day... Fantastic weather we had last weekend as well - fingers crossed it'll be the same on race day. :-)
